THE TIME FRAME
The Book The Symphony for the City of the Dead is placed during World War 2. The Book is about Dmitri Shostakovitch and his work on his famous 7th symphony. The book shows the reader a look at the time frame and the story of Shostakovitch while living in Leningrad during the siege and the harsh living environment that the endured.
MOLOTOV-RIBBENTROP TREATY
The Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty or pact was made my the Nazis and the Soviets during world war 2. This treaty or pact was a official sign of non aggression between the soviets and the Nazis and was named after the Foreign Ministers Vyacheslav Molotov and Joachim von Ribbentrop. The pact was signed on August 23, 1939 and was in effect until June 22nd, 1941.
"OPERATION BARBAROSSA"
Operation Barbarossa was name of the operation to invade Russia and take three main cities in it. Operation Barbarossa began in June 22nd, 1941 and broke the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Operation Barbarossa's goal was to take the Russian Cites, Leningrad, Moscow, and at the time Stalingrad (Now know as Volgograd) Operation Barbarossa was the Nazis attempt to take Russia resulting in failure at the battle of Kursk, leading to the failure of "Operation Citadel" and "Operation Barbarossa".
SIEGE OF LENINGRAD
The siege of Leningrad began in September 1941, and lasted until January 1944. The siege claim the lives of 800,000 people, about one third of the population. The long siege lasted 900 days, and rained tracer fire, and incendiary bomb by the Nazi air raids. The Air Raids claimed many lives but the bigger force that claim so many lives was the starvation due to a air raid that burned all of the city's food due to poor planing. With both the Air Raids, and Starvation, it claimed countless lives.

His story living in Leningrad during its siege is remember by this book and his work in his famous Symphony No. 7. The story behind getting the Symphony from Russia to America is amazing due to the caution that they took to keep the music safe while traveling through war. The microfilm containing the music for Shostakovitch's 7th was brought to america where the symphony was performed and even got Shostakovitch a place on the front of TIME magazine. For his Life living in such a hardship he will always be remember by his work and this book.
